The Impact of Open Source in a Down Economy: Richard Daley

Open source software has received a lot of attention over the past few years as end user organizations recognize the opportunity to address high-value business applications, while reducing costs, by taking advantage of commercial open source solutions. Now, a number of factors are changing the motivations and approaches for  the adoption of open source software, including the global economic outlook, Cloud Computing, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, and open source product maturation. A new wave is coming in open source that will change the way in which end user organizations consider and adopt open source software, as well as the way in which commercial open source vendors evolve their strategies for delivering customer value.

Third Party Integration with Openbravo

Openbravo in the Ecosystem: Integrate it into the Information System: Talend: Sandra Massé, Channel Manager EMEA

Managing enterprise processes requires input and participation from all departments across a company. To ensure successful execution of their initiatives, enterprises must have agile and high-performance operations that guarantee seamless interoperability of applications and databases, as well as fluidity of data throughout their information systems.

In this context, the ERP cannot be viewed as a standalone system, but as a component of the overall information system. Ensuring its interoperability with other applications is therefore essential. This is why Talend and Openbravo have worked together to prokenvide the tools needed to easily customize and integrate business processes and data.

Expanding Openbravo´s Market Reach with DB2, IBM: Antonio Maranhao & Boris Bialek, Lead Data Management & Solutions LATAM

At this seminar we will present several benefits, both from the technical and business perspectives, of having DB2 as a supported relational database management system (RDBMS) for Openbravo ERP. Currently, Openbravo ERP only supports Oracle and PostgreSQL as an underlying RDBMS. This fact can impose a restriction when it comes to reaching certain customers that rely on other database vendors such as IBM. These customers are usually not willing to change their infrastructure to adopt a different RDBMS as that would incur extra costs with licenses and personnel training on the new technology. DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows is a widely used RDBMS that delivers top performance for both OLTP and OLAP applications and provides hands free administration for several platforms.

Word from the CTO: Creating an Open Source ERP Ecosystem through Modularity and Core Contributions: Paolo Juvara

Creating a vibrant ecosystem around an open source project is vital to the success of the project itself. It is very rare, in fact, that the primary sponsor of a project is able to succeed alone. Successful projects require an active Community that contributes to, and extends the project with additional functionality and value-added services.

This session looks at examples from other projects and discusses what lessons Openbravo has learned from those experiences.

It also describes what role Openbravo believes it should be playing within its Community and what it expects the Community to do, in order to achieve a successful open source ERP ecosystem.

The Community Imperative: Matt Asay

Open source contributes to higher-quality software, less vendor lock-in, and lower prices. But the real benefits of open source really start when enterprises, system integrators, and others actively collaborate with open source communities like Openbravo. The day the community becomes bigger than the company, everybody wins.

In this presentation, Matt Asay will describe the various benefits that come from participating actively in open source communities, and will address Openbravo's efforts, in particular, to build a product that welcomes community involvement.

Localization: Opening New Markets and Developing Unchartered Territory: Richard Morley

The advent of modularity in Openbravo ERP 2.50 brings significant changes in the way that localization capability can be developed, delivered and packaged, not only for Openbravo, but for all members of the Openbravo community.

It also brings increased opportunity for Openbravo and its community to jointly contribute "value add" features to the core, while at the same time increasing the breadth and depth of available localization packages. A key component to this is the vision of what Openbravo considers core functionality, what it views as localization, and the relationship between the two concepts.

Join this interesting and informative session to hear how Openbravo and its partners have already leveraged these opportunities to address some of the challenges of new markets.

This session will also present an insight into a vision of an evolving localization ecosystem in which all may thrive; the unchartered territory.

Building Modules: Best Practices: Ismael Ciordia

Modularity is an abstract concept defining the ability of certain systems to be composed from separate parts - called modules. But how does it work in Openbravo? What can be done in an Openbravo module? What cannot be done? How does it improve maintainability? How decoupled is the life cycle of a module with the life cycle of its dependencies? How can a customization  be developed so that it can later be shared and reused? .

During this session all these questions will be answered through user stories and real modules. The types of modules and artifacts, dependency management, maintainability and module life cycle will all be described, without going into high-level technical details.

The session will provide a concrete understanding of how Openbravo modularity works and attendees will be able to transform ideas for functional enhancements to Openbravo ERP into a clear pathway to implementing them through modules. And since a number of interesting modules will be presented, attendees may be inspired with new ideas...
